My grandfather committed suicide?

My grandfather was dying a slow and painful death of cancer, then today shot/hung himself in a secluded woodland area. I am very torn up by the whole event, so please no harmful comments. The police took the gun away (1960s royal air force ruger revolver), will my family get the gun back and if so will it be deactivated?
